Mumbai, Mar 23: Opposition parties in Maharashtra, including the Indian National Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), on Monday intensified their attack on the state government, demanding strict action against senior officials and ministers allegedly linked to controversial self-styled godman Ashok Kharat.
The issue was raised in the Assembly by Congress Legislative Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar through an adjournment motion. He called for the resignation of those in power who allegedly supported Kharat, along with their inclusion as co-accused in the case. Although the motion was rejected by Speaker Rahul Narwekar, Wadettiwar was permitted to present his concerns.

Highlighting the seriousness of the allegations, Wadettiwar described the case—centred around the alleged sexual exploitation of women—as deeply disturbing. He criticized the growing influence of superstition in a state known for progressive values, claiming that individuals like Kharat misuse religious sentiments to deceive people.
He further alleged that over 100 objectionable videos related to Kharat have surfaced, raising questions about the extent of the activities and the support network behind him. According to Wadettiwar, reports suggest that certain high-ranking officials convened meetings to shield Kharat from legal action, with some revenue and police personnel allegedly attempting to delay or prevent his arrest.
The Congress leader argued that the case extends beyond the godman himself and involves members of the administrative machinery, including officers from the IAS, IPS, and revenue departments. He termed it a failure of democratic accountability if those sworn to uphold the Constitution are found protecting such individuals.
Wadettiwar insisted that forming a Special Investigation Team alone would not suffice. He demanded the resignation of ministers involved, suspension of implicated officers, and a thorough examination of Call Detail Records (CDRs) to uncover the full extent of the network supporting Kharat.
Echoing similar concerns, senior Congress MLA Nana Patole called for stringent action against all those involved. Bhaskar Jadhav of the Shiv Sena (UBT) described the controversy as a setback to Maharashtra’s progressive image and urged the government to act without bias.
Responding to the uproar, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that a formal investigation has already been initiated and assured that appropriate action will be taken against Kharat and anyone found complicit.
