Agarkar seeks tenure extension after India’s white-ball dominance

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi

New Delhi, Mar 19: Following India’s successful defence of their T20 World Cup title, chief selector Ajit Agarkar has reportedly requested an extension of his tenure until the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Agarkar, who has been serving as chairman of the men’s senior selection committee since June 2023, had his contract renewed ahead of IPL 2025 on the back of strong team performances. Under his leadership, India clinched major titles including the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

According to reports, the former India international has now approached the Board of Control for Cricket in India seeking continuity in his role through the next ODI World Cup cycle. Discussions are currently underway within the board regarding this request.

There have also been internal indications that another former cricketer from the West Zone was being considered as a potential successor, though no firm decision has been made so far.

During Agarkar’s tenure, India has enjoyed remarkable success in limited-overs formats, securing three ICC trophies, including two T20 World Cups and a Champions Trophy. The team has also maintained an impressive record, losing only two out of 33 matches in white-ball cricket and winning the Asia Cup in both 2023 and 2025.

However, India’s red-ball performances have been less consistent. The team has faced setbacks in Test cricket, including successive home series defeats and a loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy abroad.

The period has also marked a phase of transition, with senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin stepping away from various formats. While Sharma and Kohli continue to feature in ODIs, Ashwin has retired from international cricket altogether.

As the BCCI weighs its options, the decision on Agarkar’s extension is expected to play a key role in shaping India’s roadmap to the 2027 World Cup.
