Zoom-in culture unacceptable: Sapthami Gowda calls for dignity, industry backs her

Bengaluru, Mar 4: Kannada actor Sapthami Gowda has strongly objected to what she described as “deliberate zoom-ins and inappropriate angles” used by certain paparazzi and YouTubers while filming female actors at public events, calling the practice disrespectful and unacceptable.

Taking to social media on March 3, the actor shared a detailed note highlighting the recurring issue of videos and photographs being shot from angles that focus on women’s bodies rather than their work. “Repeatedly, videos and photographs of female actors at public events are shot and circulated from inappropriate angles, with unnecessary zooms that focus on our bodies rather than our work.

This behaviour, carried out by a few individuals, is disrespectful and unacceptable. We are here for our craft. We are here for our cinema,” she wrote.

Condemning such practices, she added, “We unequivocally condemn deliberate zoom-ins and inappropriate angles. They are clear violations of dignity and will not be normalised or tolerated. We expect those covering events to maintain professionalism, basic respect, and decency. We stand united in setting this boundary. We stand in solidarity with every woman who has experienced this – and we will continue to support one another in demanding respect.”

Her statement quickly drew support from fellow actors Rukmini Vasanth, Ashika Ranganath and Divya Spandana, who reposted her message on their respective social media handles, amplifying the call for respectful coverage of women in the film industry.

Ashika, sharing the note, wrote, “Let’s normalise respect – not violation. Deliberate zoom-ins and inappropriate angles are disrespectful and unacceptable,” echoing Sapthami’s stand.

In a separate message, Sapthami acknowledged media professionals who have maintained ethical standards. “There are journalists and media friends who have shown immense respect and with whom we have felt extremely secured with. We request them to support us against these handful who are brutal in how they capture and project the ladies,” she stated.

The collective response from the actors has sparked wider conversations online about the need for dignity and professionalism in celebrity coverage, with several social media users backing their stand.

Meanwhile, Sapthami, who was recently seen in The Rise of Ashoka alongside Sathish Ninasam, is currently busy with script narrations and exploring new genres. Fans can expect updates on her upcoming projects soon.
