Four family members die after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning soak pit in Vaishali

Patna, Mar 1: In a devastating incident in Bihar’s Vaishali district, four members of a family lost their lives after reportedly inhaling toxic fumes from a toilet soak pit in Anwarpur village under the Sarai police station limits on Sunday.

Officials said the tragedy occurred when the family was cleaning or repairing the septic tank. One member allegedly entered the pit and fell unconscious due to the build-up of poisonous gases. In a desperate attempt to save him, three other relatives climbed inside one after another, but they too collapsed from suffocation.

The deceased have been identified as Anand Kumar, his son Rahul Kumar, Anand’s brother Pankaj Kumar, and another family member. Three additional persons were rescued in critical condition and rushed to a nearby hospital, where they remain under treatment.

The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the village. Particularly heartbreaking is the death of Rahul Kumar, who had been married just days earlier on February 24. What was a time of celebration for the family turned into mourning within a week.

Senior district officials, including Hajipur-Sadar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Rambabu Baitha and Lalganj Sub-Divisional Police Officer Gopal Mandal, visited the spot to review the situation. Authorities indicated that oxygen depletion inside the enclosed pit, possibly caused by gases such as methane or carbon monoxide, led to the fatalities.

Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem examinations, and further legal procedures are in progress.

Villagers described the scene as harrowing, with four bodies being brought out together, leaving the community in shock. The administration has conveyed condolences to the bereaved family and assured compensation in accordance with government norms.

The incident highlights once again the grave risks associated with cleaning septic tanks and soak pits without proper safety gear and precautions. Experts have long cautioned that toxic gases can accumulate rapidly in confined spaces, leading to instant unconsciousness and, in many cases, death.
