Sanand, Mar 1: Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Semiconductor Assembly, Test and Packaging (ATMP) facility of Micron Semiconductor Technology India Private Limited in Sanand during his visit to Gujarat, marking the commencement of commercial production and shipment of the first made-in-India semiconductor memory modules from the plant.

The development is being seen as a major milestone in India’s semiconductor manufacturing journey and a significant step in strengthening the country’s position in the global semiconductor value chain.

Addressing the gathering, Modi said the India AI Impact Summit organised in the country had showcased India’s capabilities in artificial intelligence to the world. He remarked that while the previous century was regulated by oil, the microchip is set to regulate this century.

Calling the occasion historic, the Prime Minister said it symbolises India’s transition from being primarily known for software to emerging as a strong player in hardware and global value chains. He described the facility as a crucial example of India–United States partnership in securing global supply chains, particularly in critical sectors such as chips and AI.

Modi noted that the rapid progress of the Sanand plant — from signing of the MoU to commencement of commercial production — sends a clear message globally that India is ready, reliable and capable of delivery.

Referring to the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 and the approval of ten major projects, he said a pan-India semiconductor ecosystem is taking shape from Sanand to Noida and Assam. As manufacturing ambitions expand alongside growing demand for electronics and automobiles, he lauded Micron’s leadership and termed the decade a turning point for India’s youth.

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said the semiconductor sector is a foundational industry and that India has now secured a place on the global map. He highlighted that electronics manufacturing has grown sixfold and exports eightfold under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, adding that mobile phones are now among the country’s top export items.

He described the inauguration as historic and said chips designed in India will now be manufactured in India.

According to official sources, the project involves a total investment of over Rs 22,500 crore and is the first proposal approved under the India Semiconductor Mission. The facility, which broke ground in September 2023, will convert advanced DRAM and NAND wafers into finished products for global markets.

Spread across nearly 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, the Sanand unit is among the largest raised-floor cleanrooms in the world, underscoring India’s growing manufacturing capabilities in high-technology sectors.
