Pakistan eye semi-final spot as England boost their T20 World Cup hopes

Colombo, Feb 28: Pakistan remain in contention for a semi-final berth in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after England defeated New Zealand by four wickets in their final Super 8 match on Friday at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. England, led by Harry Brook, finished the Super 8 stage unbeaten, securing six points from three matches and the top spot in Group 2.

New Zealand sit second with three points and a net run rate of +1.390, while Pakistan are third with one point from two matches and a net run rate of -0.461. For Pakistan to progress, they must either chase the target within 12.4 overs or secure a win by a margin of at least 63 runs against Sri Lanka in Pallekele on Saturday.

Posting a big total may be challenging, as recent matches at Pallekele have favoured spinners on a slowing pitch. Sri Lanka were dismissed for 95 against England while chasing 146, and Pakistan themselves managed 164 against England. Bowling first may be Pakistan’s more realistic route, requiring them to restrict Sri Lanka to a modest score to enable a rapid chase.

Sri Lanka, however, will be eager to end their Super 8 campaign with pride after three successive defeats. Pakistan supporters face an anxious day, with the fate of their team in their hands. Weather conditions in Pallekele are favourable, with no rain forecast and cloudy skies expected, setting the stage for a high-stakes clash.
