Annamalai refuses to comment on Vijay’s personal legal issue, calls it a private matter

Chennai, Feb 28: Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai on Saturday made it clear that he would not politicise the reported legal issue involving actor-turned-politician Vijay and his wife, Sangeetha, describing it as a strictly personal matter.

Addressing reporters, Annamalai referred to media reports stating that a petition concerning Vijay’s wife had been filed in a Chengalpattu court in December and had only recently come to public attention. He emphasised that the matter should remain between Vijay, his wife, and the judiciary.

“I see this as an issue between Vijay, his wife and the court. It concerns their personal life. I do not want to politicise it,” Annamalai said.

However, he clarified that while he would refrain from commenting on personal matters, he remains prepared to respond to Vijay’s political statements when required.

“When it comes to his political remarks, I am always ready to give a political reply,” he added.

Annamalai observed that public life inevitably brings heightened scrutiny. “Entering politics is like stepping into a ring of fire. As long as one stays away from politics, personal life may not be closely examined. But once you enter public life, everything comes under scrutiny. This applies to all leaders, including Vijay,” he noted.

He further remarked that Vijay would have been aware of the pressures and consequences that accompany a transition from cinema to politics. “He must move beyond these issues. His political journey is larger than this. Ultimately, in the upcoming Assembly elections, it is the people who will decide whether to accept him,” Annamalai said.

Drawing parallels with other film personalities who entered politics, Annamalai cited actors such as Chiranjeevi and the early political phase of M. G. Ramachandran, pointing out that many faced intense pressure after stepping into public life.

“As a successful actor, one can live peacefully and enjoy stardom. But politics is different. It demands a price,” he remarked.

Reiterating his stance, Annamalai concluded that he would not target Vijay’s private life for political gain. “My politics is not about commenting on someone’s personal matters. This is a private issue, and I do not wish to make it political,” he said.
