Bareilly, Feb 25: A 32-year-old delivery executive allegedly attempted self-immolation outside the Baradari police station after his motorcycle was seized by police, officials said on Wednesday.

The man, identified as Akshay Kashyap, sustained burn injuries to his upper body and was admitted to the district hospital. His condition is stated to be out of danger. Authorities have ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Police said that on Monday night, Kashyap had reached Gangapur for a delivery and parked his motorcycle outside a shop, leaving the key in the vehicle. An unidentified person allegedly tried to flee with the motorcycle and hit another individual, causing injuries. The vehicle was subsequently seized by police.

Kashyap reportedly made several visits to the police station seeking release of his motorcycle, claiming that the delay disrupted his delivery work and caused him severe distress.

Around 10.30 pm on Tuesday, he allegedly poured petrol on himself and set himself ablaze outside the police station premises. Police personnel present at the station rushed to extinguish the flames and shifted him to the hospital for treatment.

Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Manush Pareek said Kashyap had been informed that the motorcycle would be released within a day or two if no complaint was filed; otherwise, it would be released through due court procedures.

Pareek added that an inquiry has been initiated and appropriate action will be taken if any police personnel are found at fault.
