New Delhi, Feb 24: In a landmark achievement for Indian cinema, Manipuri film Boong bagged the Best Children’s and Family Film award at the BAFTA Awards 2026, drawing widespread acclaim and congratulatory messages from across the country.
Produced under the banner of Farhan Akhtar, the film’s historic win has been hailed as a proud moment for India and particularly for Manipur.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the team on social media platform X, stating, “Congratulations to all those associated with this film. This is indeed a moment of immense joy, especially for Manipur. It also highlights the immense creative talent in our nation.”
Responding to the Prime Minister’s message, Farhan Akhtar expressed gratitude, writing, “Thank you Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji for your words of appreciation.”

At the 2026 edition of the BAFTA Awards, Boong outshone strong international contenders such as Arco, Lilo & Stitch, and Zootopia 2 to secure the prestigious honour.
Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, the film narrates the journey of a young boy growing up in Manipur amid social and political unrest. The story has been praised for its sensitive storytelling and emotional depth.
Boong was released in theatres in September 2025 after touring multiple international film festivals, where it garnered critical acclaim. The project has been co-produced by Farhan Akhtar, Ritesh Sidhwani, Vikesh Bhutani, Alan McAlex and Shujaat Saudagar.
The award is being seen as a major boost for regional cinema from the Northeast, spotlighting the rich storytelling traditions and cinematic talent emerging from the region.
