Ahmedabad, Feb 22: Title holders India take on South Africa in a high-voltage Super Eight clash of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Saturday.
The encounter carries added significance as it pits India against the very opponents they defeated to lift the 2024 title. With the tournament entering the business end, both teams are seen as strong contenders for the crown once again.

India are widely regarded as favourites, but the Proteas are not far behind. Both sides boast deep batting line-ups extending till No. 8, quality all-rounders and versatile bowling attacks, making this contest one of the most balanced match-ups of the Super Eight stage.
While South Africa emerged strongly from a challenging group, India are yet to hit top gear despite comfortable wins. However, any below-par performance at this stage could derail their title defence.
Much of India’s focus will be on left-hander Abhishek Sharma, who has registered ducks in all three matches so far. His struggles, coupled with India’s relative discomfort against off-spinners, have emerged as potential concerns.
Historically, Abhishek has dominated off-spin, scoring 442 runs off 251 balls in T20 cricket at a strike rate of 176.09. But his current lean patch has highlighted India’s vulnerability, especially with a left-handed heavy batting order.
South Africa appear ready to exploit that weakness. Part-time off-spinners Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs have reportedly put in extended bowling sessions in the nets, with preparations tailored for India’s line-up.
Team combination discussions have also surfaced in the Indian camp. There is speculation about bringing in Kuldeep Yadav for Arshdeep Singh, given the black soil surface in Ahmedabad. However, former players have suggested that the pitch is likely to offer bounce rather than turn, favouring seamers.
South African opener Quinton de Kock indicated that the surface appears flat with good bounce and value for shots, hinting that pace bowling could be more effective.
India may therefore persist with Arshdeep Singh, with Axar Patel potentially replacing Washington Sundar. There is also talk of introducing Sanju Samson to reduce reliance on left-handers, though major changes to the batting unit seem unlikely.
With both sides evenly matched and a packed crowd expected at the world’s largest cricket stadium, the stage is set for a crucial contest that could shape the trajectory of the Super Eight stage.
