Kaup: Three arrested within hours of chain-snatching incident

Kaup, Feb 21: In a swift operation, the Shirva police station arrested three persons within three to four hours of a chain-snatching incident reported on Saturday morning. 

The arrested have been identified as Anand (49) of Zoida in Uttara Kannada district; Kiran Dharmaraj Godimani (19) of Haliyala in Uttara Kannada district; and Sasidhara (19) of Haliyala in Uttara Kannada district. 

According to the complaint, on February 21, at around 9:30 am, Helen D’Souza (69), wife of late Edwin D’Souza and a resident of Shankerpura, Kurkalu village in Kaup, was tying jasmine flowers behind her house along with Geetha when Anand, a former tenant, along with two others, came to enquire about a rental room. After speaking with her and having tea, the trio were informed that no rooms were available and they left towards the neighbouring house of her sister, Theresa.

 

At around 9:45 am, one of the accused returned to Helen and asked for her mobile number, stating that he would call if a room became available. While she was giving her number, he suddenly grabbed her by the neck and snatched a 28-gram gold chain from her. When her sister Theresa tried to intervene, she was pushed aside. The three accused then fled the spot on a Pulsar bike. 

The stolen gold chain is estimated to be worth Rs 3.5 lac. Based on the complaint, a case was registered at Shirva police station. 

Immediately after registering the case, the Shirva police inspector and staff rushed to the spot and conducted a detailed investigation. CCTV footage from nearby areas was examined, which revealed that three persons had arrived and fled on a Pulsar motorcycle. The footage was shared through the district control room with all check posts across the district. 

Following intensive naka bandi operations, the accused were intercepted at the Shirur check post by Byndoor police station personnel and were later handed over to the Shirva police. 

The Shirva police recovered the stolen gold chain and seized the Pulsar bike used in the crime from the accused. 

The detection operation was carried out under the leadership of CPI Kaup Azmath Ali. The team included Shirva police inspector Manjunath Marabada, Byndoor PSI Sunil Kumar, and staff members Dayananda Prabhu, Anwar Ali, Harish, Yalallinga Suresh of Shirva Police Station, along with personnel from Byndoor police station.

Kaup, Feb 21: A group of three youths allegedly snatched a gold chain from a 70-year-old woman after approaching her house on the pretext of inquiring about a house for rent in Shankerpura, Shirva.

The victim has been identified as Helen D’Souza (70). The incident occurred around 10 am when she was at home. According to the complaint, the three youths arrived on a motorcycle and enquired about houses available for rent in the neighbourhood.

The accused reportedly asked about nearby houses and then requested the woman’s mobile number. While she was noting it down, one of the youths suddenly snatched the gold chain weighing approximately three sovereigns (around 3 pavan) from her neck and jumped over the compound wall. The other two accomplices joined him, and the trio fled the spot on their motorcycle.

The Shirva police rushed to the scene and are investigating the case. CCTV footage of the incident has been secured, and efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the accused.

    Gold, silver or any valuable, costly items these buggers loot and enjoy. But in this case police have done a good job by arresting the chain snatchers within hours. The police should be rewarded.
