Unseasonal rain lashes parts of Dakshina Kannada district

Mangaluru/Puttur, Feb 18: Unseasonal rain was reported in several parts of Dakshina Kannada (DK) district on Wednesday evening.

Rain was recorded in and around Sullia and Puttur areas of the district during the evening hours. Showers were reported in places including Sampaje, Kabaka, Vittal, Bettampady, Renja, Nidalli, and Kondalakanda. Many farmers had arecanut kept in the yards of their houses for drying, which got wet due to the rain.

There has been a noticeable change in the weather in the coastal region over the past few days. Mornings have been slightly cool with cloudy conditions, while the afternoons have been hot. The intensity of the heat has also been increasing, and fluctuations in temperature have been observed. In Udupi district too, the weather remained cloudy along with sunshine.

An increase in the minimum temperature was recorded in Dakshina Kannada district on February 18. A maximum temperature of 32.2°C was recorded, which is 1.3°C lower than normal, while the minimum temperature of 23.1°C was recorded, which is 1.2°C higher than normal. According to the forecast of the India Meteorological Department, the coastal region is likely to experience cloudy and sunny weather conditions over the next two days.

Around Vittal, a good spell of rain was witnessed for about ten minutes on Wednesday afternoon. Rain was reported in Vittal town, Ukkuda, Punacha, Bulerikatte, and other areas. Though the rain brought temporary coolness, the heat and humidity increased later. Usually, rain is not expected in February. Last year, it had rained for nearly ten months in particular.

Moderate rain was recorded in the Sampaje check post area on the Dakshina Kannada–Kodagu border. The region had been experiencing scorching heat for the past few days, and around 11 am the sky turned cloudy. Heavy rain lashed the area at around 4.30 pm and continued for about ten minutes. Locals stated that rain was also recorded in Arekallu, Koyanadu, Jodupala, Madenadu, and Devarakolli.
