Udupi, Feb 16: A state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was inaugurated at CSI Lombard Memorial (Mission) Hospital (LMH), Udupi, on February 14.
The new unit was inaugurated by Hemachandra Kumar, bishop, CSI-KSD, by cutting the ribbon. The programme commenced with a prayer by Kishore Kumar, area chairman of CSI–KSD, followed by the formal lighting of the lamp.

In his inaugural address, bishop Hemachandra Kumar stated that the unit would play a vital role in safeguarding the health of newborns. He noted that the facility, established to provide advanced medical care to neonates, marks a significant milestone for healthcare in Udupi district. “A neonatal care centre was the most needed facility for this hospital. No patient should have to return without treatment due to a lack of facilities. All necessary equipment for newborn care is now available here. Today, our hospital provides competitive and comprehensive medical services, and people have placed their trust in us. In that same spirit, we must extend treatment to the poor and economically backward, setting an example for others,” he said.
Dr Ashok Kumar, president of IMA, highlighted the importance of immediate care after birth. “A newborn’s future depends on receiving proper care right away. Only with good neonatal care can a child’s brain and intellectual growth develop healthily. Therefore, such a unit is essential and will help reduce infant mortality rates,” he added.
Presiding over the event, hospital director Dr Sushil Jathanna explained that the hospital’s high volume of deliveries made the establishment of an NICU necessary. “This unit represents hope and a secure future for newborns. Nearly 50 percent of newborn deaths occur within the first 24 hours if proper care is not provided. This period is critical, and we have established this well-equipped intensive care unit with that in mind,” he said.
Ivan D Soans, treasurer, CSI-KSD, offered the closing prayer, and the programme concluded with a benediction by bishop Hemachandra Kumar.
Earlier, HR manager Leona Strelita welcomed the gathering. Nursing tutor Novita Noronha delivered the vote of thanks, and senior accountant Sandra Jacklin compered the event. Paediatricians Dr Guruprasad Shetty, Dr Janardhan Prabhu, and Dr Manohar Bolur, along with students and staff members, were present.
