Melbourne, Feb 2: Tennis great Novak Djokovic delivered an emotional message to fans after suffering a four-set defeat to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the Australian Open final at Rod Laver Arena on Sunday, admitting that his future in the sport remains uncertain.
The 38-year-old Serbian star went down to the 22-year-old Alcaraz, leaving him tied with Margaret Court on 24 Grand Slam titles and still one short of the all-time outright record. The loss marked Djokovic’s first appearance in a Grand Slam final since his Wimbledon defeat to Alcaraz in 2024.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Djokovic said he had not expected to reach another major final and reflected on his long journey in tennis. “I must be very honest and say that I didn’t think that I would be standing in a closing ceremony of a Grand Slam once again,” he said, adding that the past fortnight had been made special by the support he received.
Despite having a mixed relationship with Melbourne crowds over the years, Djokovic praised the fans for their warmth and encouragement. “You guys, particularly the last couple of matches, gave me something that I have never experienced in Australia. That much love, support, positivity,” he told the audience.
Expressing gratitude, Djokovic said the backing from the stands helped push him forward during the tournament. Reflecting on what lies ahead, he remarked, “God knows what happens tomorrow, let alone in six months or 12 months. So it has been a great ride. I love you guys.”
Djokovic’s words sparked speculation about his future on the professional circuit, as the former world number one hinted that his time at the top level of the sport may be nearing an uncertain crossroads.
