Karkala woman dies after domestic assault; case altered following death

Karkala, Feb 2: A woman who was seriously assaulted by her husband following a domestic dispute has succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mangaluru.

The incident occurred on January 27, at around 9.50 am at Gummettu in Nooralu Betttu village of Karkala taluk. The deceased has been identified as Geetha, a resident of Gummettu. According to police, Geetha and her husband, Sunil Kumar, had an argument over family-related issues, during which Sunil allegedly attacked her with an unidentified weapon with the intention to kill. She sustained severe bleeding injuries to her forehead and neck.

Geetha was immediately shifted to a private hospital in Mangaluru, where she was admitted to the intensive care unit. Based on a complaint, Karkala Rural police registered a case (Crime No. 10/2026) under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for attempt to murder and arrested the accused.

The accused, Sunil Kumar (44), son of late Gopala Poojary, a resident of Shwetha House, Gummettu, Nooralu Betttu village, Karkala taluk, Udupi district, was produced before the court and remanded to 14 days of judicial custody.

Meanwhile, doctors later informed the police that Geetha had suffered fractured chest bones and severe internal abdominal injuries. Despite intensive treatment, she failed to respond and passed away at 5.46 am on Monday February 2.

Following her death, the police have converted the case from attempt to murder to murder by invoking Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Further investigation is underway.
