Udupi: DC extends deadline to Jun 1 for fixing doors in private buses

Udupi, Jan 30: The deadline for fixing doors in all private buses has been extended till Jun 1, 2026, following a meeting with private bus owners chaired by Udupi deputy commissioner (DC) Swaroopa T K and Udupi police superintendent Hariram Shankar.

Considering the ongoing school academic schedule and the examination season till March, along with the limited number of garages equipped to retrofit folding-type doors on buses, the district administration has granted additional time to private bus operators to comply with the directive.

The decision was taken during the meeting convened to discuss safety compliance and operational issues. Bus operators sought more time, citing practical difficulties in installing doors on all vehicles simultaneously.

However, the DC and the superintendent of police made it clear that with immediate effect, fitness certificates (FCs) will be renewed only with a specific condition. Any bus that fails to install the mandatory folding-type door by the Jun 1 deadline will have its FC cancelled.

Private bus operators unanimously agreed to the conditions laid down by the administration and assured 100 per cent compliance within the stipulated period. They also agreed that any bus operating without doors after the deadline may be seized and that no objections will be raised against enforcement action.

The district administration reiterated that the move is aimed at ensuring passenger safety and warned that strict action will be taken against violators once the grace period ends.

The Traffic Police should notice the ratio of government buses and private buses to the ratio of public travelling at morning rush hours to colleges and work. College going boys throwing safety to the wind are the main culprits. Only an accidental death will open the eyes of parents and authorities. I suggest the medias photographers to stand at the Big Bazaar Bus stop and the Fish Market bus stop in Udupi town in the morning hours between 7am to 9am to witness this phenomenon. One cannot simply police the bus conductors to overload passengers in the buses. What is truly required is 100% more government buses in all crowded routes to contain the overloaded private buses. Moreover, the free travel for girl and women in government buses must be abolished too, as this is what causes the government buses to get overloaded too.

We have the Chaltha Hai attitude... being the children of smaller God. Installing doors on buses is one aspect that is easily implemented. The issue is buses with doors keep the doors permanently open. As good as not having doors. So what needs to be done is install doors with with buzzer and switch. When doors are closed bus can move without sound. What concerns me is there is absolutely no concern for for the safety of the public.
