MCC to levy heavy fine for dumping waste on city roads in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jan 29: Dumping waste along roadsides in Mangaluru will now invite hefty penalties, as the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to intensify enforcement under its ‘Clean Mangaluru’ campaign.

The waste management issue has emerged as a major challenge for the civic body. According to available data, as many as 85 locations across the city have been identified as black spots, with almost every ward affected. Although the MCC has implemented several measures in the past to curb the problem, the efforts have not yielded the desired results. In view of this, the corporation has stepped up action against violators and decided to strictly enforce penalties.

To keep a close watch on offenders, solar-powered CCTV cameras have been installed at various locations across the city. These cameras can be shifted from one place to another. However, in some areas, waste heaps continue to be found even directly below these cameras. In certain black spot locations that have been beautified by the MCC, incidents of waste dumping are still being reported.

As part of its awareness drive, the MCC has launched campaigns in Tulu with messages such as “Kajavu padodchi anna… kajavu padodchi akka”, urging citizens not to dump waste. The corporation is also spreading the message, “This is my city, keeping it clean is my responsibility,” to encourage public participation.

There are also complaints from some wards that waste is not collected daily. In several households, waste is not segregated into wet and dry categories. Sanitation workers reportedly leave unsegregated waste at the spot itself. Officials have pointed out that public cooperation is crucial in maintaining cleanliness in the city.

The MCC has announced that strict action will be taken against those who spoil the city’s appearance by dumping waste in public places. A fine ranging from Rs 1,500 to Rs 25,000 will be imposed on violators. Members of the public can also send photographs of offenders dumping waste to the WhatsApp number 9449007722. MCC officials have appealed to citizens to actively participate in making Mangaluru a clean city.

First and foremost, this is a good and well-thought-out initiative by the MCC. Providing large garbage bins at appropriate locations will definitely help improve waste management. At the same time, we must understand the ground realities. Many lanes are extremely narrow—some can only accommodate autos, while others allow just a single car. Because of these constraints, deploying large garbage collection trucks is not feasible in many areas. The smaller trucks currently in use can only collect waste up to their capacity, and the remaining garbage has to be cleared during the next collection cycle. This is a limitation we need to acknowledge. With Mangalore's population growing rapidly, new ideas and practical solutions from experts are essential to address these challenges effectively. I request knowledgeable and experienced individuals to come forward and share workable solutions for the benefit of the city.

The first step is MCC has to provide waste 🗑 bins at 500 meter spacing. Without bins the public are forced to throw waste on the road. Let us do the first step. Then talk of cc tv and fining voilators.

Good work by MCC. Even at Neermarga-Merlapadav (Kempugudde to Merlapadav church) main road side people are dumping waste at night. Please install these type of CCTV cameras in that areas too....

As humans, we live on this planet, which is our only home. We speak about development and creating a better world for future generations. In schools, we are taught not to dump waste or pollute the environment—but sadly, we do not practice what we learn. The same polluted water, the same contaminated soil, give us the fish we eat and the vegetables we grow. Pollution does not disappear; it comes back to us. Literacy alone has no meaning if it is not connected to responsible action. We must first understand that the Earth is our home, just like our house, where we are educated and nurtured. If we fail to protect it, our future generations will suffer. God save us if we do not change our ways.

First thing first is if this is the rule, make it know to the general public on who littered in public and how much was collected. The corporation makes rules but never follows them. Look at how dirty the walls and surrounding areas of the corporation is first.
