Goa to make helmets mandatory for pillion riders, enforcement phased in

Panaji, Jan 29: Goa’s transport minister Mauvin Godinho announced on Wednesday that wearing helmets will now be mandatory for pillion riders, in accordance with central government rules. However, he emphasized that enforcement will be gradual to allow citizens time to adapt.

“We have to follow central government guidelines, which is why pillion riders will have to wear helmets. But I told the RTOs not to press people so soon,” Godinho said, adding that authorities will provide two months’ relaxation until April before strict enforcement begins.

The minister also noted that the central government plans to amend the Motor Vehicles Act and introduce uniform rules for cab aggregators, which will be applied across all states.
