Udupi, Jan 29: Thieves broke open the door of a house at Aftab Manzil on Deen Street in Nadsalu village and decamped with gold jewellery weighing 70 pavans, valued at around Rs 48 lac, along with a Rado watch worth Rs 50,000, in an incident reported on Tuesday night.

The burglars allegedly broke the door lock to gain entry into the house and then forced open the iron cupboard and the locker inside it, from where they stole the valuables.

The incident came to light only on Wednesday morning. A woman residing in the house had locked it and gone to her daughter’s house located within the same premises on the evening of January 27. When she returned the next morning, she found the house broken into.

At the time of the incident, the house owner’s daughter-in-law had gone to her mother’s house, while the son was in Dubai. He had reportedly travelled to China on business when the theft took place.

It is also reported that the house was equipped with a CCTV system with a SIM card, which was also stolen by the burglars. However, sources said that alerts from the CCTV SIM were recorded on the son’s SIM, and the mobile phone was reportedly in a 'not reachable' range at the time of the incident.

The theft has caused fear among residents, as the house is located in a densely populated area with several houses in the vicinity.

Udupi district superintendent of police Hariram Shankar, deputy superintendent of police Prabhu D T, Kaup circle inspector Azmath Ali, Padubidri police station inspector Shaktivela, along with other officials, visited the spot and conducted an inspection. Fingerprint experts, a dog squad and a special team of scientific experts also visited the scene for investigation.

Police have formed three special teams to crack the case and have launched a hunt for the thieves.
