Kodibengre boat tragedy: Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna blames tourism department negligence

Media Release

Udupi, Jan 26: MLA Yashpal Suvarna has alleged that the recent Kodibengre tourist boat tragedy, which resulted in the deaths of several tourists, was caused by the negligence of the tourism department.

In a strong statement, Suvarna pointed out that several tourist boats have been operating in violation of established rules and without valid permits. “Despite repeated complaints from the public, the tourism department failed to take timely action,” he said.

He further alleged that certain tourist boats were conducting operations using forged documents, yet no strict measures were initiated against them.

Criticising the department’s priorities, Suvarna said, “While the tourism department focuses mainly on collecting parking fees at Malpe Beach, it has completely neglected essential aspects such as cleanliness, safety protocols, and life-saving arrangements for tourists.”

He added that such tragic incidents have tarnished the image of Udupi district’s tourism sector.

Emphasising the need for accountability, the MLA urged the concerned authorities to implement stringent safety measures and regulatory checks to prevent the recurrence of such mishaps in the future.
