Karkala, Jan 23: The death toll in the horrific road accident involving a private bus and an SUV near Kambala Cross in Miyar village rose to four, while nine persons, including a child, sustained injuries. The accident occurred at around 2.50 pm on Friday, Januray 23.

The deceased have been identified as SUV driver Mannappa, Chetan (27), Rohith (28) and Mallamma (50), all from the same family. The injured include Sangeetha (40), Kavitha (38), Basavaraj (56), Kishore (28), Lakshmi (25), Jyothi (25), Jayalakshmi (24) and a two-year-old child Kushal. All of them are reported to be residents of Kalaburagi district.

As many as 13 persons, including a child, were travelling in the SUV. Of them, five who sustained serious injuries were shifted to a hospital in Manipal, while the remaining injured are undergoing treatment as inpatients at a hospital in Karkala. The child, who suffered minor injuries, is stated to be out of danger.

The victims had set out from Kalaburagi in the SUV to visit religious centres. After visiting Sri Krishna Math in Udupi, they were proceeding towards Dharmasthala via Karkala. It is alleged that a private bus, which was travelling at high speed from Beltangady towards Karkala, came to the wrong side of the road at a curve and collided head-on with the SUV.

The impact of the collision left the SUV completely mangled, causing severe injuries to its occupants. Three persons who were critically injured died on the spot, while Mallamma, who was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Manipal, later succumbed to her injuries.

A case has been registered at the Karkala city police station in this regard.

Meanwhile, locals alleged that roadworks are underway at several points between the Karkala Pulkeri bypass and Mala Ghat and claimed that the unscientific and slow-paced execution of the works has led to frequent accidents. They expressed anger over the authorities’ alleged apathy despite repeated mishaps in the stretch.

Fatal RTAs have increased manifold after, nonscientific, widening of roads wherein motorists are tempted to carelessly overspeed, because of wide & straight roads; not knowing that one small mistake would end up in a disaster!

Nothing is going to change until the people of this country learn to value human lives and strict adherence to the rule of laws. This 15km Road stretch from pulkeri bypass junction to Mala gate is going to be an invitation for disasters due to the unscientific road engineering and execution. NHAI gives a damn to the problems of public due to the corruption at every level.

RIP departed souls! The MUV involved (Toofan from Force Motors) in this accident seems to be mostly used by people from North Karnataka to ferry people & by pilgrims; they are normally overloaded with people and their belongings & rashly driven! In this case, the bus too may have been driving at high speed, which led to the MUV turning into a heap of mangled metal! All public vehicles should be compulsorily made to fix speed governors of max 90 kmph, which might reduce the number of ghastly accidents, mostly wiping out entire families in one stroke, a very painful misfortune, which should not befall on any family!

Overspeeding causes all accidents. Please drive slowly. Not even a day passes without the news of an accident. Feeling sad at the loss of lives!

I wonder why the bus was speeding. The express buses from Karkala towards Naravi, Belthangady and Dharmasthala are usually very slow and have many stops on the way. There is not much competition as there is a gap of 10 to 20 mins between each bus unlike the Udupi Mangalore route which has a bus every minute. Very sad outcome.

Roads are not planned at all. They are modified or according to the present situation No scope to follow town planning or roads network. Simply accommodate as per the flow.

I pass by this road daily. Recently, these roads have been made 4-way, so there is no opportunity for accidents since they are in good condition. However, at a few small stretches the roads are one-way since there are construction projects going on or there is a court case. So people get confused when suddenly 4-way becomes one-way, which is the issue here in Miyar. In broad daylight, if accidents can happen, then there is much carelessness on one of the drivers' sides also.

Worst planning and zero safety measures to caution the drivers of accident hotspots; worst than Sub-Saharan African countries 😞

Very unfortunate and tragic; recently the rate of fatal RTAs have increased in Karnataka; ironically, mostly people travelling to and from places of religious pilgrimages are involved in such deadly RTAs, ending with high fatalities! Very sad to see so many innocent people losing their lives for no fault of theirs! BTW, even our expressways are not designed to rev up beyond 100kmph; but most breach this limit substantially and one small error in judgement leads to deadly consequences!
