Mumbai, Jan 18: Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman has addressed the criticism he received over his recent comments on alleged ‘communal’ bias in the Hindi film industry, using social media to clarify his intentions.
In an Instagram video, Rahman emphasized that India is not only his home but also his source of inspiration and guidance. He stated that his purpose has always been to celebrate and serve through music, not to hurt anyone’s sentiments.
“Dear friends, music has always been my way of connecting, celebrating and honouring a culture. India is my inspiration, my teacher and my home. I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood, but my purpose has always been to uplift, honour and serve through music. I have never wished to cause pain and I hope my sincerity is felt,” he said.

Rahman reflected on his career highlights, including nurturing projects like Jala at the Wave Summit, collaborating with young Naga musicians to create a string orchestra, mentoring the Sunshine Orchestra, building Secret Mountain, India’s first multicultural virtual band, and co-scoring Ramayana alongside Hans Zimmer. He said each of these experiences strengthened his artistic purpose.
He expressed gratitude to India for providing a space that allows freedom of expression and celebrates multicultural voices, and reaffirmed his commitment to creating music that “honours the past, celebrates the present and inspires the future.”
Rahman’s remarks come after a BBC Asian Network interaction, where he noted facing limited work offers in Bollywood. He commented on the influence of non-creative decision-makers and hinted at subtle communal bias affecting opportunities, saying, “It comes to me as Chinese whispers that they booked you, but the music company went ahead and hired their five composers. I said, ‘Oh, that's great, rest for me, I can chill out with my family.’”
Through the video, Rahman aimed to clarify that his focus remains on music that connects cultures and uplifts communities, rather than creating controversy.
