Panaji, Jan 15: February in Goa is not just about love in the air, but also about vibrant celebrations as the much-awaited Goencho Carnival makes a grand return from February 13 to 17. The coastal state is set to come alive with a riot of colours, lively music, festive banners and an infectious carnival spirit across towns and cities.
One of Goa’s most iconic festivals, the carnival will feature elaborate parade floats highlighting Goan traditions, culture, art and community life, drawing locals and tourists alike to the streets.

For Quepem-based Raul Pereira, the carnival is a tradition close to his heart. A regular participant for the past 28 years, his association with carnival floats began in 1998, when his group won first place at the Panjim parade. “Initially, it was about gathering friends and neighbours to participate. We portrayed toddy tappers, and the same concept fetched us first prize. Since then, I have been deeply involved in showcasing Goan traditions through carnival floats,” he said.
This year’s carnival theme reflects the Goa Tourism Department’s focus on responsible celebration, stressing cleanliness, safety, sustainability and community participation.
Adding to the excitement, Cedric da Costa has been crowned King Momo for this year’s carnival. Expressing his enthusiasm, he said, “This is my first time as King Momo and I’m extremely excited. The ceremonial attire is being prepared, and I’m thrilled to be part of this grand celebration.”
