Belagavi, Jan 4: A language-related controversy erupted during the inauguration of a cricket tournament at Sardar’s High School ground here after a group of activists objected to the display of a saffron flag and English-language banners at the venue.

The incident occurred on Sunday during the inauguration and exhibition matches of the Mahantesh Kavatagimath cricket tournament. While the event was being anchored in Marathi, a saffron flag was displayed on the dais and congratulatory banners were put up in English. Kannada and English writings were also visible on the surrounding walls.

Four women activists belonging to a pro-Kannada organisation objected to the arrangements, alleging that Kannada had not been given due prominence. They questioned why the red-and-yellow Kannada flag had not been displayed and why Kannada was missing from some of the banners. The activists attempted to enter the ground even as an exhibition match was in progress, leading to a brief commotion at the venue.

Police personnel and onlookers gathered at the spot following the incident. The situation was brought under control after the organisers removed some English banners and assured that Kannada banners would be installed.

The episode drew criticism from players and cricket enthusiasts, who expressed anger over attempts to introduce linguistic disputes into sporting events, stating that such incidents disrupt the spirit of sportsmanship.
