Brahmavar, Jan 3: An alleged illegal timber cutting and sale case at the Brahmavar Agricultural Research Centre in Marakadaidu has created serious concern in Udupi district. Reports say that hundreds of valuable trees were cut and transported illegally from the centre, claiming it was done in the name of trimming branches. The timber was allegedly sold, causing a loss worth lacs of rupees to the government.
Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna visited the research centre to inspect the spot and gather information about the case. Speaking to the media, he said that a case has already been registered regarding the illegal transport of timber, but no action has been taken against the accused even after 20 days.

The MLA demanded immediate suspension of senior field supervisor Shankar, who is allegedly involved in the case. He said strict disciplinary action must be taken. Suvarna also pointed out that about 400 acres of land at the research centre is meant for farmers’ benefit, but no proper development has taken place. Instead, he alleged that some officials are using government property for personal purposes, which has caused injustice to farmers. He warned that if immediate action is not taken, protests will be intensified.
Local residents have also raised their voice and demanded a proper investigation. They alleged that when the issue came to light, officials tried to put the blame on a contractor. The public is now demanding strict action against all those responsible for the illegal.
