Mangaluru, Dec 31: The post-monsoon (Northeast monsoon) season has come to an end, with Coastal Karnataka recording the highest rainfall in the state during this period.

As per official data, the coastal region normally receives 259 mm of rainfall between October and December. However, this season witnessed 279 mm, registering an increase of 7 per cent over the average.

The coast had seen a strong post-monsoon spell last year as well, when rainfall was 51 per cent above normal.

Between October 1 and December 30, Dakshina Kannada district was expected to receive 376 mm of rainfall but recorded 448 mm, marking a 19 per cent rise over the normal average.

In Udupi district, rainfall stood at 314 mm against the normal 312 mm, reflecting a 1 per cent increase.

Meteorological officials said the sustained showers during the post-monsoon period helped improve groundwater levels and benefited agriculture in several parts of the coastal belt.
