Doctors warn over surge in weight-loss injections misuse across India

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi

New Delhi, Dec 20: India’s medical community has raised the alarm over the rapid and uncontrolled increase in the use of weight-loss injections, including Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic, warning that their widespread availability and over-prescription pose serious health risks.

These drugs, originally developed to treat diabetes and obesity, have quickly become popular beyond clinical need, with many users seeking them for cosmetic weight loss at gyms and beauty clinics — sometimes without proper medical screening. Experts caution that this misuse can lead to dangerous side effects such as muscle loss, pancreatitis and vision problems, especially in vulnerable individuals.

Leading specialists like Dr Mohit Bhandari and Dr Anoop Misra have urged government regulation, stricter prescription controls and thorough patient screening to prevent misuse. They emphasise that while these medications can be effective for certain patients under supervision, they are not substitutes for lifestyle changes like balanced diet and regular exercise.

With patents for these drugs set to expire soon — opening the market to cheaper local alternatives — medical experts stress the urgent need for clear guidelines, appropriate use policies and public awareness to ensure patient safety and prevent long-term harm.
