Mapusa, Dec 15: A major fire disaster was narrowly avoided at a prominent four-star resort in the Baga–Arpora tourist belt on Sunday, thanks to quick action by hotel staff and the prompt response of fire tenders from Mapusa and Pilerne.

According to sources, two large diesel generators at the resort caught fire on Sunday morning, allegedly due to overloading. Fire and emergency services received an alert at around 10.30 am, and by the time teams arrived, the blaze was largely under control.

“The situation was brought under control quickly, and no injuries were reported,” a fire department official confirmed.

The fire, suspected to have originated from an electrical short circuit, rapidly spread through the generator room, completely damaging both generator units. Resort authorities immediately evacuated all guests as a precautionary measure, ensuring everyone’s safety.

Initial firefighting efforts by resort staff using portable fire extinguishers helped restrict the spread of the flames until fire tenders arrived. The fire department has estimated the financial loss at approximately Rs 10 lakh.

Terming the incident a serious warning, a senior fire and emergency official said, “This should serve as a wake-up call for all commercial establishments in the state. There is a need to closely examine and strengthen fire safety systems and protocols.”
