Puttur, Dec 3: The state government has approved the construction of a new 300-bed medical college hospital in Puttur. Through the Department of Medical Education, the finance department has sanctioned the funds. Legislator Ashok Kumar Rai informed that funds from Budget for 2025-26 have been transferred from the Health and Family Welfare Department to the Medical Education Department for this purpose.
Speaking at a press meet on Monday, MLA Rai said the medical college is estimated to cost Rs 1,000 crore. The file is currently with the finance department, and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be completed within one and a half months, with the tender process expected in two months. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is slated to lay the foundation stone in the coming days.

The MLA highlighted three key demands: the college to be built on 40 acres at Bannur, transfer of health department files to the Medical Education Department, and construction of the 300-bed hospital. These demands were fulfilled by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.
Upgrade for taluk hospital
With the construction of the Bannur medical college hospital, Puttur Taluk Hospital will be upgraded into a women’s specialty hospital. The facility is expected to generate employment for around 6,000 to 7,000 people, with priority given to Tulu-speaking residents of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
Key attendees included KPCC vice president M S Mohammed, Puttur Block Congress president Krishnaprasad Alva, Guarantee Scheme president Umanath Rai, KPCC coordinator Kavu Hemanath Shetty, PUDA president Amal Ramchandra, Guarantee Scheme member Lancy Mascarenhas, and Block Minority Unit president Abdul Rahiman Azad.
MLA offers thanks to deities
Following the official sanction for Puttur Medical College, MLA Ashok Rai offered prayers at Kodimbadi Sri Mahishamardini Temple, Puttur Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple, Puttur Central Juma Masjid, and Puttur Mayide Devast Church as a gesture of gratitude to the deities.
Other prominent attendees included KPCC general secretary M S Mohammed, Umanath Shetty Perne, DCC general secretary Muralidhar Rai Matantabetu, and local leaders Sudesh Shetty, Shivaram Alva, Raviprasad Shetty Bannur, Panjigudde Eshwarbh, Roshan Rai Bannur, Farooq Bayabbe, Nuruddin Salmar, Abdul Rahiman Azad, Sian Darbe, Vinay, Shroin Sikvera, Lancy Mascarenhas, among others.
