Puttur, Nov 26: A major accident was averted after a compound wall from a neighbouring house collapsed onto a newly rented residence at Janata Colony in Subhash Nagar, 34 Nekkiladi, on November 24 evening. Thanks to the timely alert by a mason at the site, the occupants escaped unhurt.
The family had just moved into the house rented out by Jabbar to Ilyas of Nandavar. Earlier in the day, the family had performed religious rituals and relatives had gathered. In the evening, preparations for a feast were underway in the kitchen.

Behind the rented house, on a higher elevation, stands a house belonging to Sushila, who resides in Bengaluru. For the past 10 days, construction of a compound wall was being carried out there.
Around 5 pm on November 24, the mason noticed signs of the wall becoming unstable. Sensing danger, he shouted out to the occupants below to immediately vacate the house. Those working in the kitchen rushed out. Moments later, the compound wall collapsed, crashing onto the rented house.
The impact completely destroyed the kitchen and caused damage to the house. The fridge, gas cylinder, stove and utensils were buried under the debris.
Besides Ilyas’ family, several relatives, including 7–8 children, were present in the house, many of them in the kitchen preparing the meal at the time of the incident.
