Iran rejects G7 accusations, calls statement “Baseless and Irresponsible”

Tehran, Nov 14: Iran has sharply dismissed allegations made by the Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers, with foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei condemning the criticisms as “baseless and irresponsible.” His remarks came on Thursday in response to a joint communiqué issued at the conclusion of the G7 meeting in Canada’s Niagara region, according to Xinhua.

In their statement, the G7 foreign ministers accused Iran of supplying military support to Russia in its war against Ukraine. They also urged Tehran to comply fully with UN Security Council resolutions and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), calling for renewed cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), including reopening access to all nuclear sites and materials.

The ministers further encouraged Iran to participate in direct negotiations with the United States, backed by France, Britain, and Germany — the E3 — and pressed all UN member nations to honour obligations under the reactivated “snapback” mechanism that reinstated UN sanctions on Iran in September.

Baghaei strongly criticised the G7 for supporting what he described as “illegal and unjustified” moves by the E3 and the US to exploit the dispute resolution mechanism of the 2015 nuclear deal in order to reimpose lifted Security Council sanctions. He argued that the G7 stance ignored what he called “illegal aggression” by Israel and the US, including attacks on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities. Calling the G7’s position “hypocritical and intrusive,” he said their demands on Iran to cooperate with the IAEA overlooked this “joint Israeli-US crime.”

He also rejected the G7’s Ukraine-related accusations as “repetitive and irresponsible,” reiterating Iran’s stated opposition to the conflict and its support for resolving the war through dialogue and negotiation.
