Kolkata, Nov 6: Tension flared up in Nabadwip, Nadia district of West Bengal, on Wednesday night after the convoy of Union Minister of State for Education and former BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar was allegedly attacked by Trinamool Congress (TMC) activists.

Majumdar had attended several party programmes in the district earlier in the day. While returning from Nabadwip, his convoy reportedly got caught amid clashes between BJP and TMC supporters. During the chaos, one of the vehicles in his convoy was allegedly attacked by ruling party activists.

Speaking to the media, Majumdar claimed the attack was “totally unprovoked” and that several Trinamool Congress leaders and supporters, allegedly in an inebriated state, were involved. He also alleged that a number of BJP workers were beaten up by TMC-backed goons, with some sustaining serious injuries.

However, the local Trinamool Congress leadership denied the allegations. Biman Saha, chairman of the TMC-run Nabadwip Municipality, stated that the unrest began after BJP supporters allegedly attacked a local office of the Trinamool’s trade union wing, INTTUC, near the Nabadwip bus stand. He added that scuffles broke out when INTTUC supporters staged a protest against the alleged attack.

This incident adds to a growing list of violent confrontations between BJP and TMC workers in the state. Last month, BJP MP Khagen Murmu’s vehicle was attacked in Jalpaiguri district, leaving him seriously injured. Similarly, in October, the convoy of BJP’s Darjeeling MP Raju Bista was allegedly attacked in Sukhia Pokhari area of Darjeeling district.

Police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order as tensions remain high.
