Gadag, Oct 31: In a bizarre incident in Gadag, a man climbed up a coconut tree and remained there for nearly four hours after locals mistook him for a thief.

The man, identified as Basavaraj Sollapur from Belagavi, had visited Vivekananda Nagar in Gadag, where he mistakenly knocked on the door of a house thinking it belonged to his friend. Upon realizing it was the wrong house, he left the spot. However, the residents became suspicious and informed the police.

Fearing arrest, Basavaraj climbed a nearby coconut tree. Both the police and locals searched for him for hours but could not locate him until someone spotted him sitting atop the tree. Despite repeated requests from the police and residents, he refused to come down.

Soon, a crowd of around 50 to 60 people gathered, believing him to be a thief. The fire and rescue team later arrived with a ladder and managed to convince Basavaraj that he would not be harmed. He was then safely brought down from the tree.

Benefit of doubt is in his favour. He should be released without harm.
