Gorakhpur, Oct 31: In a shocking case of fratricide, a 32-year-old man from Gorakhpur allegedly strangled his 19-year-old sister to death over a dispute regarding compensation money and later dumped her body in a sugarcane field in Kushinagar.

The accused, Ram Ashish Nishad, murdered his sister Neelam following a quarrel over Rs 6 lakh compensation received by their father, Chinku Nishad, for land acquired under a road project. Ram was reportedly enraged after his father decided to use the money for Neelam’s upcoming wedding in January.

According to police, on Monday, Ram strangled Neelam with a piece of cloth, broke her limbs, and stuffed her body into a sack. He tied the sack to his motorcycle and rode nearly 70 km to Kushinagar to dispose of it.

CCTV footage captured Ram carrying the large sack, which he claimed contained wheat when questioned by police en route. He later dumped the body in a sugarcane field.

Neelam’s father initially assumed she had gone for Chhath Puja, but neighbours reported seeing Ram leaving home with a sack, prompting suspicion. Police registered a missing complaint and launched an investigation.

During questioning, Ram initially denied involvement but later confessed to the brutal murder. Police recovered Neelam’s decomposed body from the field on Wednesday night.

“This is a tragic incident triggered by greed and family discord,” a police official said. “The accused has been arrested, and further investigation is underway.”

Neelam, who was preparing for her marriage in January, became the victim of a shocking act of violence by her own brother — a crime that has left the local community deeply disturbed.
