New Delhi, Oct 27: India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been hospitalised in Sydney following a left rib cage injury sustained during Saturday’s match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. According to sources, Iyer was taken to a hospital by the BCCI medical team after his condition worsened, and he has since been admitted to the ICU for close monitoring.
Officials familiar with the matter told that Iyer’s blood pressure had been fluctuating dangerously, prompting immediate medical attention. At the hospital, scans reportedly revealed internal bleeding caused by the impact of his fall, after which he was admitted to prevent possible infection or damage to nearby organs.

“He will be further examined by specialists on Monday, who will decide the course of his recovery. Depending on their assessment, Iyer could remain in the ICU for a few more days or be kept under close observation for up to a week,” the source said, adding that his family has been informed and may travel to Sydney to be with him if required.
The incident took place in the 33rd over of Australia’s innings, when Iyer attempted a spectacular diving catch off Alex Carey near deep third man after sprinting from backward point to intercept a swirling ball from Harshit Rana’s delivery. Although he completed the catch successfully, giving India a vital breakthrough, Iyer immediately clutched his left side and collapsed in visible pain. He was helped off the field by teammates and team physio Kamlesh Jain and did not return for the remainder of the match.
Despite Iyer’s injury, India went on to secure a convincing win, chasing down Australia’s 236-run target with ease. Rohit Sharma (121 not out) and Virat Kohli (74 not out) stitched an unbeaten 168-run partnership to seal victory.
The 31-year-old Iyer, who has been in strong form recently, is not part of India’s T20I squad for the upcoming series against Australia, scheduled to begin on Wednesday. His current focus remains on recovery, with the medical team expected to provide a formal update once the specialist assessments are complete.
