Barefoot and in habit, Kasargod nun wins gold in state hurdles

Daijiworld Media Network – Wayanad

Wayanad, Oct 24: A 55-year-old Christian nun from Kasargod has gone viral after winning a gold medal in the hurdles event at the Kerala State Masters Athletics Championship — competing barefoot and dressed in her religious habit.

Sr Sabina, a physical education teacher at Dwarka AUP School in Mananthavady, displayed remarkable energy and determination during the event, earning widespread admiration.

Originally from Kasargod, Sr Sabina moved to Wayanad in the 1990s and has been serving as a teacher there ever since. She is set to retire in March next year and remarked that this might be her last competition before retirement.

A video of Sr Sabina gracefully leaping over hurdles in her nun’s attire has gone viral on social media, drawing praise from many, including Kerala education minister V Sivankutty, who lauded her accomplishment, describing it as ‘a symbol of willpower’.

What a mind blowing long jump by Sr. Longy Sabina... Keep it up. We want to see your high jump as well. Good example to our PT teachers who walk with "hun udkache tambyache bhan". But sister my humble request to you is, please please don't teach this technique to the other inmates of the convent, newly joined/juniors/seniors/novices and also senior citizens !! The reason is very simple. If they know this technique, they will find easy to jump the high built walls of the convent and go back home.. I remember our beloved Wilfy bab's beautiful konkani song on laxhan sangtha hav baate laxhan sangtha hav ..laxshan tuje bore asa...modhe illi guspod distha...chariss vorsa kovethanth ravon doro udon dhavon yethay...So hath jodke binthi...🙏🤣🤣

Sr. Sabina, Congratulations. It is not just a medal, it is a slap on many pot bellied PT teachers in schools who do all unnecessary jobs in schools except for training the students. Your win could also inspire other PT teachers to keep fit and teach student by being an example.

Something refreshing to hear about a nun other than their regular religious and social service activities. Many can take inspiration and be part of such other activities than being confined to their convents and places of service. The trend has been set 😁

First ever event performed a nun ! I am not sure whether or not permission was needed from religious heads allowing her to participate in such social events or she acted on her own? Inspiring indeed.🙏
