Mangaluru, Oct 23: Incidents of theft have been on the rise in and around Suratkal, with CCTV footage capturing burglars’ movements, leaving residents alarmed. The situation has worsened to such an extent that people are hesitant to lock their homes and attend social gatherings at night.
Police have been urging the public to install CCTV cameras to help prevent burglaries. However, despite the installations, thefts continue unabated. CCTV footage has revealed burglars armed with machetes, knives, iron rods, and other deadly weapons committing crimes. Masked gangs have been targeting houses and shops, creating fear among the public.
One such theft was reported at a shop in Suma Tower near Suratkal Junction on October 10, where a burglar stole Rs 3.5 lac. Police investigations have traced his movement towards Udupi. Earlier, on September 5, a series of thefts had occurred in the Muchur area, though the thieves failed to make away with valuable items.
Footage from CCTV cameras installed in various houses and locations has shown burglars armed with dangerous weapons, raising serious concern among residents. Locals fear that confronting such armed thieves could be risky.
Most thefts are being carried out in isolated houses after burglars confirm that no one is home. Residents have urged the police to intensify night and early-morning patrols and keep a close watch on migrant workers from other states who come seeking daily-wage jobs.
Incidents of burglary have increased in several neighbourhoods of the city, leaving residents anxious. The shortage of personnel at local police stations has also increased the burden on officers.
“The police department must recruit additional staff, form special night patrol teams, and provide separate vehicles and facilities to bring thefts under control,” said Dr Bharat Shetty, MLA, Mangaluru City North.
“Investigation into the recent thefts in the Suratkal area is progressing swiftly. Several clues have already been obtained, and the accused will be arrested soon,” said K Ravishankar, deputy commissioner of police (crime and traffic).
