Chitradurga, Oct 22: A teacher who brutally assaulted a 9-year-old student at a Sanskrit Vedadhyayan school in Nayakanhatti, Challakere taluk, has finally been arrested, following widespread outrage across the state. The accused, Veeresh Hiremath, allegedly physically attacked the student, Tarun, striking him on the head and back and pushing him with his foot in an inhumane manner.

The horrifying incident, which occurred in February 2025, was captured on a mobile camera and went viral, prompting condemnation from government leaders, including minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar.

The Chitradurga police traced and arrested Hiremath in Kalaburagi. He was brought back to Nayakanhatti and presented before the Challakere court, which remanded him in judicial custody. Hiremath has now been sent to Chitradurga District Jail.

According to reports, the teacher assaulted the student because he allegedly contacted his parents by phone. Despite the student raising his hands in defense, Hiremath continued to physically abuse him. Locals have alleged that efforts were previously made to suppress the case and prevent its disclosure.

The viral video sparked widespread public outrage, leading residents to protest outside the Sanskrit school, demanding accountability from the school administration. The student, who was reportedly distressed after the incident and had even attempted to harm himself near a nearby lake, has since been shifted to another school.

Those were the days, when parents used to go school and insisting on punishing their wards, if they do not perform. I remember my teacher orders her ward to bring the stick from the fence daily to beat the students!! Now the students threaten the teacher/ parents that will complain if they were beaten!!

How I wish we could complain as well when we were beaten in school or elsewhere when we were kids. Teachers would hit us with hands in a covent school, slap us, bang out heads on the desk..
