Afghanistan & Pakistan agree to ceasefire after Qatar-brokered talks

Doha, Oct 19: In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, the Qatari government announced that Afghanistan and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire, bringing an end to several days of hostilities between the two neighbouring countries.

The truce follows a period of intense violence, including Pakistani airstrikes that reportedly killed at least ten people, breaking an earlier 48-hour ceasefire. Fresh negotiations, facilitated by Qatar, have now resulted in both sides committing to peace.

“During the negotiations, the two sides agreed to an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of mechanisms to ensure lasting peace and stability between the two countries,” Qatar’s foreign ministry confirmed in a statement.

The recent violence erupted on October 11, shortly after explosions in Kabul occurred following Taliban foreign minister Amir Muttaqi’s rare visit to India. In retaliation, Taliban forces launched attacks along Pakistan’s southern border, sparking days of cross-border tension.

Kabul had earlier accused Islamabad of breaching a temporary truce and resuming strikes that caused civilian casualties on both sides. Pakistani officials, however, maintained that their airstrikes targeted militant groups linked to the Pakistani Taliban and were carried out in response to attacks on Pakistani paramilitary forces.

Following the latest escalation, delegations from both Pakistan and Afghanistan engaged in peace talks in Doha under Qatari mediation, which led to the signing of a new ceasefire agreement.

This latest conflict marks the second time Pakistan has been drawn into hostilities this year, following its earlier confrontation with India that concluded after the Indian Army launched ‘Operation Sindoor’—a series of precision strikes against Pakistan-based terrorist networks.

Officials from both Kabul and Islamabad have expressed cautious optimism about maintaining stability under the new truce, as Qatar continues its diplomatic efforts to foster regional peace.
