Beltangady, Oct 16: Renowned Thenkuthittu Yakshagana bhagavatha (lead singer) and titleholder Rasaraga Chakravarthi Dinesh Ammannaya passed away on Thursday, October 16 at his residence in Arasinamakki. He was 65.

A disciple of the legendary Damodar Mandechchar, Ammannaya began his artistic journey through the Puttur troupe and went on to serve the Yakshagana stage as a bhagavatha for over four decades.

He earned immense recognition during his tenure with the then-prominent Karnataka Mela, where several stalwarts of the Yakshagana stage performed under his melodious rendition. His unique voice, especially in Tulu prasangas (stories), won the hearts of countless admirers. Known for his soulful and emotive delivery, Ammannaya was regarded as an unparalleled bhagavatha in rendering karunarasa (compassionate emotion) through his masterful command over ragas.

He had also performed extensively with the Edaneeru troupe and continued to appear on various platforms even after retirement.

Dinesh Ammannaya’s distinctive singing style had made him a household name among Yakshagana lovers. His demise has been widely mourned by artists and admirers across the cultural and theatrical community.
