Trump unveils higher education reform agenda, targets ‘Woke’ ideology on campuses

Washington, Oct 13: US President Donald Trump on Sunday announced a sweeping reform agenda for American higher education, promising to eliminate what he calls “Woke, Socialist, and Anti-American Ideology” from college campuses and restore merit-based principles. The declaration was made through a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.

“Throughout most of our History, America's Colleges and Universities have been a Great Strategic Asset of the United States. Tragically, however, much of Higher Education has lost its way, and is now corrupting our Youth and Society with WOKE, SOCIALIST, and ANTI-AMERICAN Ideology,” Trump wrote. He added that his administration is moving “FAST” to enforce federal laws against discrimination and guide institutions back to traditional values of merit and hard work.

Trump outlined a framework for universities willing to cooperate, emphasizing equality and civil rights protections. “To those Universities that continue to illegally discriminate based on Race or Sex, we will continue our current efforts to swiftly and forcefully enforce Federal Law. But for those Institutions that want to quickly return to the pursuit of Truth and Achievement, they are invited to enter into a forward-looking Agreement with the Federal Government,” he said.

The President stressed that compliant institutions must uphold high academic standards, protect free speech, ensure affordability for students, maintain institutional neutrality, and curb foreign influence in university finances. Trump argued that such reforms would cultivate talent, promote a culture of achievement, and instil “a Love of Country,” enabling students to lead lives of success and fulfillment.

“Our Nation's Great Institutions will once again prioritize Merit and Hard Work before ‘group identity,’ resulting in tremendous new Research and Opportunity to benefit all Americans,” he wrote, vowing that America’s universities will regain their role in shaping future leaders while adhering to federal law.

The announcement marks a significant policy push ahead of the 2025 election cycle, signalling the administration’s intent to reshape the ideological landscape of US higher education.
