Mangaluru, Oct 12: In a meticulously planned fraud, Kavoor police have arrested three individuals accused of pledging imitation gold ornaments as genuine, thereby cheating a cooperative society of Rs 6.24 lac.

The arrested have been identified as Harif Abubakkar (39), a resident of Aakash Bhavan, Anand Nagar; Mohammed Ashiq Kattathar Hussain (34), residing in Nanthoor, Bikarnakatte; and Abdul Rameez (33), from Belandur village in Puttur taluk.

According to police sources, on October 9, Harif Abubakkar approached the Atmashakti Multipurpose Cooperative Society in Kavoor and pledged gold ornaments claiming they were genuine. Believing his claim, the society sanctioned a loan amounting to Rs 6.24 lac.

However, suspicions soon arose over the authenticity of the pledged ornaments. Upon verification, the jewellery was found to be fake.

Based on a complaint filed by the society, Kavoor police launched an investigation and successfully apprehended all three accused. The police also seized Rs 5 lac in cash, imitation gold ornaments weighing about 45 grams, a car valued at approximately Rs 20 lac, and mobile phone handsets — altogether worth nearly Rs 26.5 lac.

“This was a calculated attempt to deceive. Thanks to prompt action by our team, the accused were arrested within days,” said a senior police official.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of ACP (North sub-division) Srikanth K. The team comprised inspector Raghavendra M Baindoor, PSI Mallikarjun Biradara, ASI Chandrappa Sunil, and constables Sambhaji Kadam, Kenchan Gowda, Pramod Kumar, Nagaraj Bairagond, Praveen, Riyaz, Thirthaprasad, and Anand.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

Further investigation is currently underway.

Why suspecting afterwards, before sanctioning only should have checked with govt certified gold valuer or at least with purity machines. I have observed gold made through traditional goldsmith generally fails in purity machines in most cases.
