Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru Mangaluru, Oct 8: School education and literacy minister Madhu Bangarappa criticised those opposing the state’s socio-economic and educational survey, asking, “With what face are you opposing this?” He was speaking at a meeting of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress OBC leaders held in Mangaluru on Wednesday. Madhu Bangarappa, who is also the in-charge minister for Shivamogga district and president of the state Congress OBC wing, condemned the remarks made by opposition leaders against the ongoing survey. “The deadline for completing the survey has been extended till October 18,” he announced. As of Tuesday 8.30 pm, an average of 81% of the survey had been completed across the state, with Bengaluru at 38%, Dakshina Kannada at 68%, and Udupi at 62%. He added that progress in Mysuru was delayed due to the Dasara festivities. Bangarappa assured that teachers engaged in survey work would be compensated with appropriate leave adjustments. “As per the Right to Education Act, 220 teaching days are required. We currently have 240 days available, so even if leave is granted, it will not affect the academic calendar,” he clarified. Targeting BJP leaders Prahlad Joshi, Pratap Simha, Tejasvi Surya, Ashwath Narayan, and R Ashok, Bangarappa said, “We have taken oath under the Constitution. When the same Constitution permits the government to conduct such a survey, how can the opposition leaders — who are also bound by that oath — stand against it?” Referring to senior leaders B S Yediyurappa and H D Deve Gowda, he said, “Seasoned leaders like them have not spoken against the survey. I believe they understand the true intent behind it.” Defending the government’s move, the minister emphasised that the survey is not directed against any caste or religion. “This is a step towards achieving equality based on human values, in line with Dr B R Ambedkar’s constitutional vision. Chief minister Siddaramaiah is leading this effort to uplift the marginalised communities,” he explained. Bangarappa also noted that technical difficulties had arisen in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Bengaluru, where around 15,000 to 18,000 residents were unavailable due to being abroad or away from home. He further warned that action would be taken as per government rules against those who refuse to cooperate with the survey process.
