New York, Oct 7: India launched a sharp counterattack against Pakistan at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Tuesday, calling it a country that “bombs its own people” and “conducts systematic genocide.” The strong rebuke came after a Pakistani representative accused India of committing sexual violence against Kashmiri women.
Speaking during the Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, said Pakistan’s propaganda against India was nothing more than “delusional tirade” and “misdirection.”
“Every year, we are unfortunately fated to listen to the delusional tirade of Pakistan against my country, especially on Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian territory they covet,” Harish said. “A country that bombs its own people and conducts systematic genocide can only attempt to distract the world with misdirection and hyperbole.”
He cited Pakistan’s Operation Searchlight in 1971, when its army launched a brutal crackdown in what was then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), leading to the genocide of civilians and the mass rape of more than 400,000 women by Pakistani troops. “The world sees through Pakistan’s propaganda,” Harish asserted.
The remarks follow a similar exchange last week at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, where India had criticised Pakistan for its “rampant state-sponsored persecution” and “systemic discrimination” of minorities.
At the time, KS Mohammed Hussain, Counsellor at India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva, said it was “deeply ironic” that a country with one of the world’s worst human rights records seeks to lecture others. “Instead of making baseless propaganda, they should confront the rampant persecution of religious and ethnic minorities that plague their own society,” he said.
India has repeatedly reaffirmed that Jammu and Kashmir “was, is, and shall forever remain an integral part of India.”
New Delhi’s latest statement at the UNSC underscores its firm stand against Pakistan’s attempts to internationalise the Kashmir issue and its continued misuse of global forums for political propaganda.
