New Delhi, Oct 2: In a major breakthrough for diabetes and weight management, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has approved Ozempic (semaglutide) for use in India. The once-a-week injectable drug is widely recognised for its success in controlling type 2 diabetes and helping with weight loss, offering new hope to millions of Indians battling chronic lifestyle-related health challenges.
India, often referred to as the ‘diabetes capital of the world’, has seen a sharp rise in type 2 diabetes cases over the years. With Ozempic’s entry, experts believe it could transform how patients manage their condition, as it helps maintain stable blood sugar levels and supports weight control—two critical factors in diabetes care.

Ozempic is the brand name for semaglutide, a medicine belonging to the class of GLP-1 receptor analogues. It works by mimicking a natural hormone in the body that regulates blood sugar. According to CDSCO, “Semaglutide Injection (Ozempic) is indicated for the treatment of adults with insufficiently controlled Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise.”
The drug is designed for once-a-week use and is meant to work alongside healthy eating habits and regular exercise. Apart from helping people with type 2 diabetes, its ability to reduce food cravings and improve feelings of fullness has made it popular worldwide for supporting weight loss.
Ozempic’s benefits include effective blood sugar control, a lower risk of heart complications, and potential improvements in liver health. These features make it particularly useful for Indian patients, many of whom face multiple diabetes-related complications.
Vikrant Shrotriya, Managing Director of Novo Nordisk India, said, “We strive to bring best-in-class innovations to improve the lives of people with chronic conditions like diabetes.”
Doctors, however, emphasise that Ozempic is not a quick fix or a substitute for lifestyle changes. It must be used only under medical supervision and alongside proper diet and exercise routines.
