Historic first: Mangalorean Kiwis hosts Liturgical Konkani Mass in Auckland

Media Release

Auckland, New Zealand, Sep 29: In a landmark event for the Konkani-speaking Catholic community in New Zealand, the Mangalorean Kiwis Community of Auckland hosted the first-ever Liturgical Konkani Mass inside a church in Auckland. Held at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Papatoetoe, this historic Eucharistic celebration drew 128 attendees from across the city, marking a new chapter in the cultural and spiritual life of Mangalorean Catholics in Aotearoa.

The Holy Mass was celebrated by Fr Basil Vaz, visiting from Vorkadi Church in the Diocese of Mangaluru. His presence and spiritual leadership deeply moved the faithful gathered, many of whom expressed joy at participating in a Mass conducted in their native Konkani language for the first time in New Zealand.

Organized by the Mangalorean Kiwis Community under the leadership of Dr Jaison Kiran D’Souza (PT), the community’s Gurkar, the event was meticulously planned to reflect both solemnity and cultural heritage. A dedicated Konkani choir added to the spiritual ambiance, led by Preethika D’Souza, Dreema Nisha D’Souza, Anita, Sapna D’Souza, Renita, Denzil Lobo, and Presilla.

Adding significance to the celebration, members of Auckland’s Annual Monti Fest Organising Committee were in attendance, along with popular Konkani radio personality Richard Miranda, presenter of Susegad Danpaar.

Following the Eucharistic celebration, Fr Basil Vaz was honoured with a memento in recognition of his spiritual guidance and support. Kika, who played a key role in coordinating the event, was also felicitated by Dr Jaison D’Souza for her outstanding contribution.

The event was further supported by generous sponsors, including Sure Car Ltd and Chicking Restaurant Taupo, both of whom were acknowledged and felicitated. Special thanks were extended to the Rodriguez and Lewis families for organizing food for all attendees, while Radio AmchiKONKANI served as the official media partner, promoting the event online.

To conclude the evening, tea was served to all, fostering a warm sense of community and togetherness. The celebration served not only as a spiritual milestone but also as a cultural affirmation of the Mangalorean identity in New Zealand.

The organizing committee extended heartfelt thanks to all attendees, sponsors, volunteers, and supporters, expressing a strong desire to host similar faith-based events in the future.
