Betul, Sept 20: A tragic accident near Temni Khurd village in Madhya Pradesh’s Betul district claimed the lives of four seers and left three others seriously injured late Friday evening, after their Bolero vehicle plunged into a roadside well.
The group, spiritual pilgrims from Chitrakoot (Uttar Pradesh), was returning from the revered Balajipuram temple when a rear tyre burst caused the vehicle to veer off the road and fall into a deep, unprotected well.
Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos and bravery as villagers rushed to the site and managed to rescue three survivors — two seers and the driver — using ropes and local tools, even before emergency services arrived.
Despite prompt action by the police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), four seers were found dead inside the submerged vehicle after an extended search. The deceased were identified as:
• Kallu alias Laxmi Giri (24)
• Malkhan Giri (65)
• Rakesh Giri (35)
• Gulab Giri (40)
The survivors — Makhanju Giri (27), Shivpujan Giri (60), and driver Rakesh Giri (32) — are currently undergoing treatment at Chhindwara District Hospital.
Deputy SP R.P. Choubey confirmed the cause of the accident and commended the villagers' swift response. He emphasized the need for enhanced safety measures along highways.
This incident has renewed public outcry over road safety, especially concerning unprotected roadside wells. Residents are demanding immediate infrastructural improvements, including protective barriers and clearer signage.
Just days ago, a similar incident near Mandsaur claimed 12 lives, further intensifying calls for urgent action.
