Covid-19’s hidden aftermath: Rising concerns over long-term heart health

New Delhi, Sep 19: Even as the world has moved past the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, medical experts continue to warn of its lingering impact on heart health, particularly the risks linked to ageing arteries and cardiovascular complications.

Studies conducted in leading global health institutes suggest that individuals who recovered from Covid-19, even with mild or moderate symptoms, face a higher chance of developing long-term cardiac issues. These include inflammation of blood vessels, clotting disorders, and a faster ageing of arteries that could accelerate risks of heart attacks and strokes.

Doctors caution that post-Covid heart complications are being reported across age groups, but are more pronounced among the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions like hypertension, diabetes, or obesity. Experts highlight that weakened arterial flexibility and lingering inflammation could silently increase vulnerability, often without early symptoms.

“Covid-19 was never just a respiratory disease. Its impact on blood vessels and the heart is becoming clearer with every study,” noted a cardiologist from AIIMS, New Delhi.

Health authorities advise regular medical check-ups, lifestyle modifications, and timely screenings for those who had Covid-19, stressing that silent risks should not be ignored.

The growing evidence has prompted calls for integrated cardiac monitoring as part of post-Covid healthcare, ensuring that the pandemic’s hidden consequences do not become a larger health crisis in the future.
