Meghalaya, Sep 13: D D Lapang, one of Meghalaya’s most revered political figures and a four-time chief minister, passed away in Shillong at the age of 91. His death marks the end of an era in the state’s political landscape, where he was not only a seasoned statesman but also a symbol of humility and perseverance.
Born on April 10, 1934, Lapang’s journey from working as a road labourer and school sub-inspector to becoming the chief minister of Meghalaya stands as a testament to his resilience and deep connection with the people. His political career began in 1972 when he was elected to the first Meghalaya Legislative Assembly from Nongpoh as an independent candidate. From there, he steadily rose through the ranks, holding various ministerial positions before taking charge of the state’s top office in 1992, and again in successive terms until 2008.

Known for his calm demeanor and consensus-building abilities, Lapang was often credited with steering the state through challenging coalition dynamics and ensuring stability in governance. His leadership focused on expanding developmental initiatives and fostering communal harmony in one of India’s youngest states.
Respected across party lines, Lapang’s legacy is rooted in simplicity and service. Even after stepping away from active politics, he remained a guiding figure, revered by both leaders and the public. His lifetime of contributions was honoured in 2024 with the unveiling of a life-size statue in Ri-Bhoi district—an enduring tribute to his impact on the state.
His passing has drawn tributes from leaders across the political spectrum, many describing him as a man who never forgot his roots and whose life story inspired generations. Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K. Sangma, along with other senior leaders from the Northeast, is expected to visit his residence to pay final respects. Funeral arrangements will be shared by the family in due course.
D.D. Lapang leaves behind a legacy built on integrity, compassion, and decades of unwavering dedication to Meghalaya and its people.
