Sanjay Singh climbs Srinagar gate to meet Farooq Abdullah amid PSA row

Srinagar, Sep 11: Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh on Thursday scaled the gate of a government guest house in Srinagar to speak with National Conference president Farooq Abdullah after alleging he was placed under house arrest while protesting the detention of AAP’s lone J&K MLA, Mehraj Malik, under the Public Safety Act (PSA).

Sharing visuals on X, Singh said, “If this is not dictatorship, then what is it?” The video shows him standing on a chair, peering over the tall gate to converse with Abdullah, who came to meet him but was reportedly stopped by police.

Farooq Abdullah, whose party heads the Jammu and Kashmir government with his son Omar as Chief Minister, slammed the curbs, calling the move “absolutely wrong.” He warned that misuse of power could spark unrest like the recent violent protests in Nepal and last year’s turmoil in Bangladesh. “Before such a fire breaks out in our country, protect the Constitution,” he urged.

The PSA allows detention without trial for up to two years. Malik, MLA from Doda, is the first sitting lawmaker in J&K to be held under this law, accused of “disturbing public order.”

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and other opposition leaders, including Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, also condemned the alleged house arrest and supported Singh’s protest.
